Throughout my time as a tutor, I’ve honed in on what I believe to be an effective yet flexible method to help any student achieve high level goals and maximize the amount of prep work they want to do.

The first step is having a meeting with the student, their parent/guardian(s), and myself, in which we create a general outline for our plan. This involves picking target test dates and reviewing their recent test scores, as well as going over what kind of a student they are and getting to know each other.

The student is then given access to my online math course, as well as the first of my custom workbooks that they’ll be given. I also give them a number of other test taking and study materials, and have them take a few practice tests to establish what we need to work on and improve.

From there, we meet regularly (usually every week or so) to hone their skills over the next few months. We build up foundational math skills, analyze essays they’ve written, and review skills for test prep and performance. I am in constant communication with my students throughout, and am a highly effective motivator for even the most resistant of students.

When the time comes, the student takes their tests and we reconvene to discuss whether we reached their goals, or if we’d like to keep improving. For this reason it is usually better to start earlier with a student so that we aren’t limited by college application deadlines.
